Artist Statement - Victoria Gilpin
As an intuitive artist, I trust, allow, and know that intuition will guide me through my creative process. My approach to painting is not having any pre-conceived expectations as to the outcome, or as I often say, "I just get out of my own way".
I choose not to use references for my painting, but rather respond with the shapes, colours, and textures revealed to me on the canvas.
In the beginning I add acrylic paint by squeezing it right out of the tube onto the canvas. After scraping the paint, squirting water to allow drips and often adding collage paper for texture, I begin to see shapes take form. I interact with the canvas in this way until there is a sense that the energy of the piece is precisely as it is meant to be.
